Life Story
Yudhishthir was the eldest among the five Pandava brothers. On request of King Pandu of the Kuru Dynasty, his first wife - Kunti invited Dharmraja (Lord Yama) as a spiritual father and given birth to him. He was later crowned as the king of Indraprastha with his capital at Hastinapur.
From his childhood, he was greatly influenced by his uncle Vidur and his great uncle Bhishma, and believed in the virtues of dharma. He was trained by two saint-warriors, Kripacharya and Dronacharya.
Because of Kunti's misunderstanding, he and his siblings had a polyamorous marriage with Draupadi, the princess of Panchal. Dhritarashtra, on Bhishma's request, divided his kingdom to end the succession dispute between Yudhishthir and Duryodhan. Former was given a barren land to rule, which he subsequently developed into a magnificent city of Indraprastha.
After Yudhishthir performed the Rajasuya Yagna, he was invited to play Pachisi, a game of dice by his jealous cousin - Duryodhan and his uncle, Shakuni. Shakuni was a master at the game and during game and represented Duryodhan. During game, he manipulated Yudhishthir into gambling and when no one was noticing, he changed dices.
He made Yudhishthir lose his kingdom, wealth, the freedom of his brothers, Draupadi, and even Yudhishthir himself. After the game, the Pandavas and Draupadi were sent into exile for thirteen years, with the last year requiring them to go incognito. During his exile, Yudhisthir was tested by his spiritual father Dharmaraja. In his year of being incognito, he disguised himself as Kanka and served the King of Matsya Kingdom.
Yudhishthir was the leader of the successful Pandava faction in the Kurukshetra War and defeated many warriors such as Shalya. After winning war, he succeeded thrown of Hastinapur. At their last journey to Himalaya, he was the only one among his brothers and Draupadi to ascend to heaven while retaining his mortal body.
